Insomnia is the friend of those fueled by the sway of All-Nite Public Radio (ANPR). What better way to get through the night than to push the scan button on the radio. Sleep is a grueling task when the beats and lyrics makes it easier to stay up all night.
“I Wanted to have a place to showcase my originals,” Victor Moore, founder and keyboardist for ANPR, says. “I also wanted a space to create whatever style or genre without being pinned down to just one sound.”
Like the late-night experience of radio, listening to ANPR is a journey that celebrates a fusion of black American music. Moore, and his band, effectively blends jazz, funk, soul, r&b, hip-hop, gospel and rock music to create a sound aimed to please people determined to jump out of boxes.
Each member of the band is shaped by the experience of performing different genres of music. From a Friday night gig playing R&B cover tunes, performing jazz on Saturday night, to playing gospel music in church on Sunday morning – the love and influence of each genre is captured in all they do.
Moore says “We perform whatever we feel. There are no boundaries. We fully express the black experience through our music.”
ANPR is a family of musicians bonded by their common experience as students of the renowned North Carolina Central University Jazz program. ANPR was officially born in 2016, but the members of the band have performed together, with a variety of bands, since their days as students at NCCU.
The family includes Darion Alexander (bass), Charles Newkirk (guitar), Alan Thompson (sax and synths), Jonathan Curry (drums), JC Martin (guitar), Lance Scott (bass) , AJ Reynolds (sax), and others. They bring over 200 combined years of experience to the stage.
ANPR is a sounding board for musicians to create beyond the limits of the industry. ANPR creates whatever they feel, however they feel. Their music is authentic and tasteful. It’s a merging of sounds that reflects the black experience.
Some days, it’s revealed through jazz improvisation. Some days, it’s that old school r&b with the blues. Some days, it’s the bass gone wild with the groove of funk. Some days, the instruments blend in a prayer like a sermon on Sunday morning.
ANPR brings it all together in one song. It’s music that makes it easy to stay up all night. You don’t have to change the channel when ANPR shows up to play. It’s a journey through the history of black American music, with movements that point in the direction of new sounds.
